Jayden Daniels’ Controversial Fourth-Down Decision

In a Monday night game, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels made a questionable move by throwing away a fourth-down pass during the second quarter against the San Francisco 49ers. On fourth-and-2 at the 49ers’ 13-yard line, Daniels faced heavy pressure, causing him to leave the pocket and run to the right. Though pursued by defenders, including linebacker Fred Warner, he opted to throw the ball away due to a lack of open receivers and uncertainty about a penalty flag thrown on the play.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn expressed that Daniels should have made an attempt to complete the pass despite the penalty, which turned out to be an illegal shift on the Commanders, not an offsides as Daniels might have expected. “Even when you know there’s a penalty, you still take your shot, man, to go throw it, complete it,” Quinn stated. San Francisco declined the penalty, resulting in a turnover on downs.
Despite the error, Daniels had a strong performance overall, completing 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns. Quinn acknowledged the quarterback’s capabilities and potential, emphasizing Daniels’ ability to make significant plays. “He always can make some throws that just kinda leaves you thinking, ‘Man, there it is. There’s only a few guys that can make that throw or that play,'” Quinn noted.
